visit ireland: A brief history
The Republic of Ireland was established as a nation officially in 1536 under Henry VIII. Ireland and Northern Ireland did not split until the 20th century, due to economic, religous, and cultural reasons. Relations with England also had some to do with the split. The majority of the people of Northern Ireland are Protestant, while Ireland and England are mainly Catholic nations. The Protestants of Northern Ireland feared domination from the Catholics, and therefore became their own Irish Free State in 1921. Ireland remains as a part of the United Kingdom and British Isles.
